5 Reasons Why You Should Drink Water First Thing in the Morning

January 18, 2017

Beep, beep, beep..... 6 am.

Waking up for work or school comes with its drawbacks. Your mouth and throat are dry. You feel groggy and lifeless.

As you become more conscious, your thoughts gravitate toward a hot shower, a big breakfast, or a steaming cup of hot coffee to get your day rolling. The usual culprits.

Sure, all of these can lead to better focus and productive days, but mornings shouldn't start with food, caffeine, or water pouring from a shower head. (Unless you drink water from your shower...I won't judge)

Let it be known, drinking a glass of cold water should be your first course of action upon waking up.

Yes, you read that correctly. Drink water as soon as you wake up. Here's why:

1.) Brain Health

Overnight, our bodies become dehydrated. When we sleep, we go anywhere from 6 to 10 hours without fluids. Your throat gets dry just from thinking about it, but that's the least of your worries. What about your brain? We are quick to forget that our brains are seventy-six percent water! When you're dehydrated, your brain is running low on fuel. This helps explain feeling fatigued, having headaches, and experiencing mood swings early in the morning and continuring throughout the day.

2.) Rehydration

It's not just your brain that's affected by dehydration. Drinking water will help bring your body back to equilibrium. It will increase the flow of oxygen and aid in the production of blood and muscle cells.

3.)  Metabolism Boost

Drinking one glass of cold water on an empty stomach will immediately increase your body's metabolism by twenty-four percent! This will aid in maintaining a healthy weight, and in conjunction with a healthy diet and exercise, weight loss!

4.) Flushing Out Toxins

When you drink a glass of water in the morning on an empty stomach, you help to cleanse your kidneys and your colon. This allows nutrients to be absorbed more easily when you finally get to eat that breakfast you've been waiting for!

5.) Satiety

Simply put, water helps fill your stomach. This will help you avoid overeating, which in turn leads to a higher chance of quick weight loss. Sign me up!
