Play With Your Food: Healthy Fried Rice

Through experience I've learned that cooking my own meals makes keeping track of what I eat so much easier. On top of that, I don't have to spend as much money as I would going out to eat.

Sure, it takes a bit more effort to prepare meals, and sometimes eating chicken and rice gets VERY boring.

My solution? Cook the foods you love.

For instance, I LOVE Chinese food.

Chicken fried rice is always a staple item when I'm craving Chinese, but it isn't necessarily the most healthy or inexpensive. One small pint of plain fried rice can have 600 calories, and that's before you add in any other items or sides. 

That's way too much for anyone with serious health or fitness goals.

So instead of running to the nearest Chinese joint, I make my own chicken fried rice.

Instead of using oil, I'll spray the pan with cooking spray. I'll proceed to cook either chicken breast or ground chicken with all my favorite seasonings (Seasonings are NOT a crime).

 

When the chicken is fully cooked, I'll throw in:

  • One cup of brown rice

  • 1/2 cup of mixed vegetables

  • One egg 

 

Once all that is cooked, I add soy sauce and Tabasco to taste!

Only 400 calories for my version, and just as flavorful!

 

Eating healthy doesn't have to be boring. It's a matter of dedication and creativity! Despite what your mother told you, PLAY WITH YOUR FOOD!!

 

Here's some tips for turning a favorite dish into a healthy meal:

  • Find the leanest meat possible

  • Add fresh or frozen veggies

  • Substitute brown rice for white

  • Use 100% whole wheat bread instead of white bread

  • Find fat-free or low-fat cheese

  • Don't be afraid to use seasonings,
